2. Java errors on launch
- Fix: Uninstall all old Java versions. Install Java 11 (not Java 16 or 17 as of 2021). Use the “Offline” installer.
Security Assessment (Important for 2021)
- Default settings: The HTTP stream had no authentication. Anyone on the same network could view the feed.
- RTSP server: Also no auth by default.
- Encryption: No HTTPS or RTSPS support without a reverse proxy.
- Port forwarding risk: Countless outdated guides instructed users to open ports 8081 and 8088 to the internet—a major security hole in 2021, leading to bot scanning and potential camera compromise.
Phase 2: Configuring the Stream (The "IP Camera" Part)
Yawcam offers several ways to view your camera. To use it as a standard IP camera, we focus on the Stream feature.
- Look at the main Yawcam console window.
- Click Settings in the top menu bar.
- Select Stream.
- Check the box that says Enable Stream.
Understanding the Stream Types: Inside the Stream settings, you will see three main options. You usually only need one active for an IP camera setup: Fix: Uninstall all old Java versions
- HTTP (Recommended for most viewers): This acts like a webpage. You can view it in a browser.
- FTP: This uploads images to a server (useful for weather cams or websites, but not real-time viewing).
- File: Saves images to your hard drive.
Configure HTTP:
- Click the HTTP tab within the Stream settings.
- Ensure the Port is set to
8081(default). - You can change the page title if you wish.
- Click Apply and OK.
2. Lightweight on Old Hardware
Because it ran on Java, it could operate on Windows 7, 8, and 10 machines with as little as 1GB RAM and a 1.6GHz CPU—perfect for recycling a 2010 netbook as a baby monitor or pet camera.
