Report: The “Xbox 360 Redump Better” Initiative – Enhancing Disc Preservation Accuracy

Date: April 12, 2026
Subject: Analysis of the Redump project’s updated Xbox 360 dumping and verification standards.

C. The "Split/Redump" Format Explained

The Xbox 360 used DVD9 (Dual Layer) discs, which hold up to 8.5 GB of data. Because standard file systems (FAT32) used on external hard drives cannot handle files larger than 4GB, Redumps are often stored in a Split ISO format. xbox 360 redump better

  • Why this is better: Instead of a single massive 8GB file that you can't transfer to your USB drive, you get a structure like:
    • Game_Name.iso.0 (Part 1)
    • Game_Name.iso.1 (Part 2)
  • This ensures the game data remains intact without needing to compress it into a lossy format.

Q3: How large is the full Xbox 360 Redump set?

A: Approximately 12-14 TB for all regions (NTSC-U, PAL, NTSC-J). For a “better” curated set (English/US only), expect ~4 TB. Report: The “Xbox 360 Redump Better” Initiative –

B. Future-Proofing for Emulation (Xenia)

As the Xbox 360 emulator Xenia improves, accuracy becomes more important. Emulators are designed to mimic the original hardware. Why this is better: Instead of a single

  • If you feed the emulator a "hacked" ISO (Scene release), the emulator might crash because it expects security data that the hackers removed.
  • Redump ISOs act exactly like the retail disc, making them the most compatible format for current and future emulation.

3.3 Validation Criteria

  • CRC32 / SHA-1 must match at least two independent dumps from different drives.
  • XGD3 Angle Check: All 8 angles of data (for anti-piracy sectors) must be present and identical to retail master.
  • Challenge-Response: Dummy challenge (AP 2.5) on modified console must pass with the extracted SS.

The "Better" Part: How to Use It

While "Redump" is a preservation format, you usually don't play the raw .iso file.

  1. For Xenia (Emulator): Redump is the best. Xenia supports raw Redump ISOs directly.
  2. For Modded Hardware (RGH/JTAG): Redump is overkill but safe. You must convert the Redump ISO to a GOD (Game on Demand) or extracted folder format. Do not just copy the raw Redump ISO to an RGH console; it will be slow and may glitch.
  3. For Archiving: Redump is the only choice. Keep the .iso and the .redump metadata file.
