Book Review: A Light in the Flame (Flesh and Fire #2)

Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout Genre: Fantasy Romance / Romantic Fantasy Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5 stars)

The Premise This is the second installment in the Flesh and Fire series, a spin-off of the massively popular From Blood and Ash (FBAA) series. The story follows Sera, a woman who has spent her life in a tower, and Nyktos, the Primal of Life. In the first book (A Shadow in the Ember), Sera was tasked with killing Nyktos, but their relationship evolved into a complex, slow-burn romance. In A Light in the Flame, the stakes are higher as Sera ascends to power and the two must work together to stop the Primal of Blood and Bone. una luz en la llama jennifer l armentroutepub link

The Good

  • The Romance: Jennifer L. Armentrout (JLA) is the queen of slow-burn romance. If you read the first book and were frustrated by the lack of relationship progression, this book delivers. The chemistry between Nyktos and Sera is intense, and the emotional payoff is significant.
  • Nyktos: The "Shadow Prince" remains a fan-favorite trope done right. He is protective, powerful, and morally grey, but his devotion to Sera drives the narrative.
  • World Building: The lore of the Primals and the Kolis (the main antagonist) is expanded effectively. It adds weight to the conflict and connects well with the main FBAA series without being repetitive.

The Critiques

  • Pacing: Like many of JLA's fantasy novels, the book is long (over 600 pages). The middle section can feel sluggish, with repetitive conversations and internal monologues.
  • Repetition: Sera's internal struggle and the "will they/won't they" dynamic are drawn out, which can be frustrating for readers who prefer fast-paced plots.
  • Cliffhanger: Be warned—this book ends on a major cliffhanger. You will likely want to have the third book, A Fire in the Flesh, ready to go immediately.

Verdict If you are a fan of the From Blood and Ash universe, this is a must-read. It fixes many of the pacing issues of the first spin-off book and provides the romance and action fans are craving. However, if you dislike long books with extensive inner monologues, it might feel like a slog. Book Review: A Light in the Flame (Flesh
