What "Umlazi Gangster 5" Gets Right (No Spoilers)
The director, Mandla N (known for Isibaya and iNumber Number), has stated in interviews that Part 5 was designed to feel like The Godfather Part II meets Gomorrah, but with the unique flavor of Umlazi’s taxi ranks and shisa nyamas.
Here are three elements that make this film stand out:
2. Likely candidate: “Umlazi Gangster” series
A popular YouTube/local film series called “Umlazi Gangster” (or similar names like Umlazi's Finest, Umlazi Crime Lord) has been produced in episodes/seasons. “Part 5” could be the 5th episode/season of such a series.
Typical plot elements:
- Rise of a young gangster in Umlazi’s notorious sections (Umlazi S, U, V sections).
- Drug trade (nyaope), car hijackings, and rivalry with other townships (KwaMashu, Inanda).
- Police corruption and vigilante justice.
- Strong isiZulu dialogue, local slang.
🔥 Logline:
After a failed heist, a veteran gang leader must navigate rival factions, corrupt politicians, and a mysterious new cop known only as "Section Commander" — all while trying to protect his teenage daughter from following the same bloody path.
How to Watch "Umlazi Gangster Movies 5"
Due to piracy concerns (the first four parts are famously available on street corner DVDs for R20), the producers have done something clever. Umlazi Gangster Movies 5 will have a limited 7-day run in theatres (Ster-Kinekor and Nu Metro) starting this Friday.
After that, it will be available exclusively on Showmax in the "Local Flavour" section. Do not buy a bootleg from the robot (traffic light) – early pirated copies have terrible audio and a watermark that says "For VFX Review Only." umlazi gangster movies 5
Synopsis:
Act 1 – The Call In Soweto, Mzee receives a please-call-me from an unknown number. It’s a photo: Thandeka, blindfolded, sitting in a familiar car – the wrecked BMW 740i from the Umlazi Gangster Movies 3 finale. The text: “Finish what you started, or she finishes.” Mzee knows the car was Skarra’s. But Skarra is dead. Who sent this?
Act 2 – The Return Back in Umlazi, Mzee moves like a ghost. He learns Thandeka is dating Lwandle – who is running a legit auto repair shop, or so it seems. But Lwandle secretly works for Nkosi, the new kingpin who engineered the message using deepfake audio of Skarra’s voice. Nkosi wants Mzee to kill Lwandle, reigniting the feud so Nkosi can step in as “peacemaker” and take over all illegal tenders.
Act 3 – The Trap Thandeka escapes her captors (hired by Nkosi) but doesn’t run to Mzee – she runs to Lwandle. When Mzee confronts them in a shipping container yard near the Umlazi Mega City, Lwandle pulls a gun. He doesn’t know the truth yet. Mzee says: “I killed your father. But I’m not your enemy. Look at your phone – see who sent you her photo.” Lwandle sees the metadata – Nkosi’s coordinates. Article outline — "Umlazi Gangster Movies: Top 5
Act 4 – Blood Legacy The three form an uneasy alliance. In a rain-soaked climax at an unfinished RDP housing project, they lure Nkosi and his men. Lwandle takes a bullet for Mzee. Thandeka saves Lwandle using a tourniquet Mzee taught her as a child. Mzee kills Nkosi with a tyre iron – the same way his own father was killed in Umlazi Gangster Movies 1.
Final scene: Mzee sits alone on the famous Umlazi stairs (eMlaza steps), watching sunrise. Lwandle and Thandeka walk toward him. Lwandle says: “I don’t forgive you. But I won’t become you.” Mzee nods. Hands him a key – to a legitimate security company contract. “Break the chain.” Cut to black. Sound of distant kwaito beat fading in.
5. Lockdown (The Series) – The Modern Era
While a TV series, Lockdown is the spiritual successor to the Umlazi Gangster movies. Set in a prison, it features the fierce, powerful female characters and gangster politics that defined the earlier films. It showcases how the genre evolved from shaky camcorder DVDs to high-end productions on Showmax. Rise of a young gangster in Umlazi’s notorious
A Quick Recap: Where We Left Off
To understand the chaos of Part 5, we need to look back. Umlazi Gangster 4 ended with the shocking assassination of "Skhothane" (played by Wiseman Mncube), the slick-talking but honorable kingpin who tried to leave the life. The final shot showed his younger brother, Sphesihle "Sphe" Dlamini, holding a bloodied AK-47, framed for a murder he didn't commit.
Part 4’s cliffhanger left fans screaming. Who ordered the hit? Is Zinhle, Sphe’s love interest, secretly a police informant? The fifth movie opens exactly thirty seconds after the last frame—no recap, no mercy.
