Trail Life USA , Elective Trail Badges allow Navigators and Adventurers to explore personal interests beyond the core requirements. To reach the highest rank, the Freedom Award, a Trailman must earn 10 elective badges in addition to the 15 required core badges. List of Approved Elective Badges

The Three Pillars of TLUSA Electives
Most elective badges fall into one of three categories, reflecting the core values of the organization: The Three Pillars of TLUSA Electives Most elective
- Outdoor Skills & Sports: Archery, Fishing, Rifle Shooting, Cycling, Camping.
- Trades & STEM: Welding, Robotics, Electricity, Drafting, Automotive Maintenance.
- Character & Service: American Heritage, Christian Apologetics, Fire Safety, Crime Prevention.
For Troop Leaders:
- Schedule "Badge Nights": Dedicate the second meeting of each month to a specific elective badge. Do Woodworking Bronze as a Troop project.
- Leverage Parents: That dad who is a cop? He can run Crime Prevention. The mom who is a nurse? First Aid. The grandfather who is a ham radio operator? Electricity/Communications.
- Create a "Gold Rush" Challenge: Offer a special recognition (like a patrol campout priority) to any Trailman who earns three Gold badges in a year.
- Don't forget the little guys: Woodlands Trail (ages 5-10) can earn Bronze badges. Keep the projects short (2 meetings max).
7. Tracking & Recognition
- Trail Life Adventure Log (digital or paper) tracks completed electives.
- TroopMaster or other scouting software can be used.
- Patch placement: Worn on the right sleeve of the uniform shirt, below the American flag.
- Recognition: Beyond patches, troops may award certificates, beads, or special privileges for completing multiple electives.
