Review: The Utility and Controversy of Super Mario Odyssey Amiibo Bin Files

Title: The Digital key to the Kingdom—Convenience at the Cost of Collectibility?

The NFC Architecture

An Amiibo is, at its core, a passive NFC (Near Field Communication) tag embedded in a plastic base. The tag contains three distinct partitions of data:

  1. UID (Unique Identifier): A serial number burned into the chip during manufacturing. This cannot be changed.
  2. User Data: Writable space for game data (e.g., saving a custom character in Smash Bros.).
  3. Game-Specific Data: Locked sectors that the game reads to identify which character is being scanned.

A Bin File is a raw, sector-by-sector binary dump of this NFC tag. When you use a tool like TagMo (Android) or a PC NFC writer, you are essentially writing a .bin file onto a blank NFC tag (like an NTAG215 sticker). The console cannot tell the difference between a plastic figure and a properly written NFC card with a .bin file—the data is identical.

Tier 2: The Classic Trilogy (Immediate Power-Ups)

Scanning standard Mario series Amiibo provides quick, reusable power-ups (once per day per Amiibo).

  • Classic Mario / 8-bit Mario: Gives a Super Mushroom (Health boost).
  • Classic Peach: Gives a Royal Heart (Temporary extra health slot).
  • Classic Bowser: Gives a Super Mushroom (Health boost).
  • Yoshi / Luigi / Donkey Kong: Give coins or hearts.

Part 4: How to Use Bin Files (The Hardware Method)

You cannot simply download a bin file and wave your phone at the Switch. You need a medium to write the bin file onto a blank NFC tag.
