Assumptions: target module is connected over USB and uses vendor-supplied Windows driver and flashing tool.
Windows (concise steps):
Identify module model and COM interfaces via Device Manager.
Download Windows USB driver package and management utility from vendor site for that exact model and firmware version.
Verify checksum of downloaded archives.
Temporarily disable unsigned-driver enforcement only if driver is unsigned (not recommended); prefer signed drivers.
Install drivers, reboot if required.
Run vendor flashing/management utility (Run as Administrator), connect to the module, read current firmware version, and follow vendor prompts for update.
After update, confirm functionality (PPP/CDC network interface or serial AT port).
Linux (concise steps):
Confirm kernel support (cdc-acm, option, qmi_wwan) or use vendor-supplied SDK.
Download firmware/firmware blobs and installation scripts from vendor.
Place firmware in /lib/firmware if required and reload drivers or reboot.
Use mmcli/qmicli/usb_modeswitch or vendor tools to manage network interface and APN settings.
Use dmesg and lsusb to confirm correct driver binding.

The Current Situation (2026)
Discontinued software – SIMOCOM U has been replaced by STARTER (later SINAMICS Startdrive / SCOUT).
No public download – Siemens does not host SIMOCOM U on their current support site for public download because it’s obsolete, not tested on modern Windows (Win10/11), and lacks security updates.
No “new” version – The last version was SIMOCOM U V1.3 / V1.4 (ca. 2005–2008).
