Ricky had a problem. It wasn’t the usual Tuesday night kind, like lag spikes or a spilled energy drink. This was existential, and it lived in a corner of his one-bedroom apartment known only as Ricky’s Room.
The room itself was a cathedral to chaos. Shelves of retro gaming consoles glowed with standby lights. A half-eaten bag of chili-cheese Fritos sat like an offering next to a CRT television. And on the screen, paused mid-explosion, was his current obsession: Wham Bam Booty Slam.
It was a ridiculous game. A forgotten arcade fighter from 1998 where anthropomorphic gemstones beat each other up for control of the “Crystalline Throne.” The graphics were jagged, the voice acting was a single guy yelling "WHAM!" and "BAM!" into a tin can, and the roster featured characters like Ruby the Rough, Topaz the Terrible, and Ricky’s main: Gem Jewels.
Gem Jewels wasn’t a fighter. She was a cluster of floating diamonds with a single, unimpressed eye. Her special move wasn’t a punch or a kick. She just… glinted at people. And in the broken logic of Wham Bam Booty Slam, that glint could parry the ultimate attack: The Booty Slam.
Ricky took a deep breath. Across the screen, his friend’s cursor hovered over Amethyst Annihilator. The match was for the neighborhood title. Winner kept the custom fight stick.
“You ready to get slammed, Rick?” Dave’s voice crackled through the headset.
Ricky said nothing. He selected Gem Jewels.
The match began. Amethyst Annihilator was a muscle-bound geode with a purple afro. He immediately leapt into the air, his massive rear end glowing with plasma energy. “WHAM BAM BOOTY SLAM! ” the announcer screamed.
Time slowed. The butt descended, a moon of destruction. RickysRoom - Gem Jewels - Wham Bam Booty Slam -...
Dave laughed. “Say goodnight.”
Ricky pressed a single button. Down, down, + light punch.
On screen, Gem Jewels didn’t move. She just… glinted.
A perfect chime rang out. The Booty Slam hit the glint and shattered—not the character, but the attack itself. Amethyst Annihilator bounced off the floor, stunned, his health bar empty. Gem Jewels floated over him, her unimpressed eye blinking once.
K.O.
The room was silent except for the Fritos bag crinkling in Ricky’s trembling hand.
“What the hell was that?” Dave whispered.
Ricky leaned back in his chair, the glow of the CRT reflecting in his glasses. In Ricky’s Room, the forgotten, the weird, and the broken always won. Ricky had a problem
“That,” Ricky said, popping a chili-cheese Frito into his mouth, “was the Gem Jewels special. You can’t slam a diamond, Dave. You just can’t.”
And somewhere, deep in the corrupted code of Wham Bam Booty Slam, the single unimpressed eye of Gem Jewels almost looked like it was smiling.

The move instantly defeats all non-boss enemies and cracks the floor, revealing a hidden passage to a bonus room—always a disco with a llama DJ.
