Regret Island Gallery Upd -
Feature: Regret Island — Gallery Update
Concept: A timed gallery update on Regret Island that illuminates visitors’ past choices through interactive, reflective exhibits.
C. Setting a Standard for Indie Art Galleries
At a time when many digital art projects rely on NFTs or paywalls, Regret Island remains free and ad-supported. This update reintroduces a tip jar (via Ko-fi) but adds no paywalled content. The developer’s note in the update log states: “Regret doesn’t ask for your credit card. Neither will this gallery.” regret island gallery upd
1. New Wing: The Anchorite’s Atrium
Previous versions of the gallery only featured three primary wings: The Shore of Spite, The Forest of Forgotten Vows, and The Lighthouse of Loops. The new UPD adds a fourth wing: The Anchorite’s Atrium. Feature: Regret Island — Gallery Update Concept: A
- Visual Style: The Atrium is an impossible indoor space that mimics a flooded cathedral. Water pours upward, and stained-glass windows depict figures screaming in silence.
- Content: 15 new high-resolution concept pieces focusing on a previously unseen character: The Custodian, a blindfolded figure who measures visitors’ regrets on an infinite scale.
- Interactive Element: Users can click on the scale to generate a personalized “regret weight,” which alters the ambient soundtrack.
Current Status: The "Shinrabasho" (Gods & Demons) Era
In the modern version of Puzzle & PAD, the old "Regret Island" (a term used to describe extremely difficult, stamina-heavy dungeons like Ultimate Endless Corridors or the old Shinrabasho that had no continues and were nightmares for players) has been effectively removed or overhauled. Visual Style: The Atrium is an impossible indoor
The Major Update (Approx. late 2023 / 2024): The dungeon once known as a "Gallery of Regret" has been updated to the Shinrabasho - Gods & Demons dungeon.
- What changed?
- Continues Allowed: Unlike the old "Regret" versions where one mistake meant failure, these updated dungeons now allow continues (Magic Stones).
- Reward Structure: They now function as a reward farm rather than a pure skill gate. Players can farm badges and rewards.
- Difficulty: While still difficult, the "regret" factor is gone because you can pay to continue, and the content is generally more accessible to modern "Meta" teams (leading to consistent No-Continues clears for veterans).
Metrics & Success Criteria
- Engagement rate (vignette plays per visitor) ≥ 70%
- Submission rate to Regret Collector ≥ 15%
- Positive emotional impact (post-visit survey) — 60% report feeling understood or motivated
3. Hidden Lore Fragments
Consistent with the project’s cryptic nature, this UPD scatters 12 new lore documents throughout the existing gallery spaces. To find them, users must hover over specific “cracked” pixels in older artwork. Highlights include:
- Fragment 7.2: A logbook from a sailor who claims the island grows larger every time someone whispers “I should have known better.”
- Fragment 9.0: A blueprint for a “Regret Engine”—a fictional device that turns emotional pain into electrical energy.
4. The Curator’s Role
- Speaks in koans and never judges, but asks one question after each exhibit:
“Would you unmake it, if you could?” - Offers no reward for answering—only acknowledgment.
