The Order of the Unbound had recruited him from a dying coastal town when he was nineteen, after he'd accidentally stepped through Edge 3 without knowing what it was. Most people who stumbled into an edge never came back. Rafian had come back carrying flowers that didn't exist in his world.
"You have the blood," the old Walker named Sera had told him. "The edges recognize you. They won't consume you."
That had been both a gift and a curse.
The Order's purpose was simple in theory, impossible in practice: map the edges. Understand them.
