Pr 402- Abu Dhabi Lighting Manual -
The PR 402 Abu Dhabi Lighting Design Manual (Version 3.0, July 2021) acts as the primary regulatory document for infrastructure lighting, focusing on energy efficiency and sustainability. It defines stringent standards for LED color temperature, durable materials, and specific lighting classes for roadways and tunnels to enhance safety and reduce power consumption. 3. Full Cutoff Luminaires
Zero uplight is not a suggestion; it is a specification. Every luminaire must be full cutoff (BUG rating of 0 or 1 in the Uplight category) . Light spill above 90° horizontal is prohibited. pr 402- abu dhabi lighting manual
8.2 Poles
- Material: Hot-dip galvanized steel or aluminum, corrosion class C5-M (marine environment).
- Height: 6m – 12m (roadway); 3m – 5m (pedestrian).
- Finish: RAL 9011 (graphite black) or approved ADM standard color.
4.2 Glare Control
- Maximum Threshold Increment (TI) for road lighting: TI ≤ 15% (for dry conditions).
- Luminaires with cut-off classification: Full Cut-off (FCO) for all public areas.
4.1 Energy Efficiency Mandates
PR 402 explicitly requires:
- LED luminaires only (except for heritage or decorative retrofits with approval).
- Minimum efficacy: >120 lumens per watt (lm/W) for road luminaires.
- Thermal management: Fixtures must operate reliably at ambient temperatures up to 50°C without lumen depreciation beyond 30% over 50,000 hours.
Strengths
- Environmental Stewardship: The manual is a regional leader in legislating against light pollution. For a rapidly urbanizing desert environment, protecting the nocturnal ecosystem is vital.
- Standardization: Prior to PR 402, lighting standards were often ad-hoc. This document standardized requirements across the Municipality, ensuring a uniform quality of infrastructure.
- Cost-Benefit Analysis: While the initial outlay for compliant LED and smart-control systems is high, the manual clearly outlines the lifecycle cost benefits, aiding developers in justifying the expense.
