The largest animal found in Mongolia, in terms of both physical size and body mass, is the Wild Bactrian Camel (Camelus ferus). While domestic Bactrian camels are also large, the wild subspecies is the most significant megafauna native to the Mongolian ecosystem.

However, if the scope includes historical/extinct animals or domesticated stock, the answer differs:

  • Largest ever animal in Mongolian territory: The Deinocheirus mirificus (a giant theropod dinosaur).
  • Largest domesticated animal: The Domestic Bactrian Camel (Camelus bactrianus).

This report focuses on extant, non-extinct wild animals. Best time: September to October

1. The Reigning Champion: The Wild Bactrian Camel

The wild Bactrian camel (Camelus ferus) is a critically endangered species found only in a few remote regions of the Gobi Desert in Mongolia and China. It is often confused with the domesticated Bactrian camel, but it is a genetically distinct species.

  • Size & Weight: Adult males stand 2.3 to 2.6 meters (7.5 to 8.5 feet) at the humps and can weigh between 450 and 820 kilograms (1,000 to 1,800 pounds). The largest recorded individuals approach 900 kg (nearly 2,000 lbs) .
  • Length: Body length reaches 3.5 meters (11.5 feet), plus a 0.5-meter tail.
  • Height at shoulder: About 2.1 meters (6.9 feet).

These animals are not only heavy but also incredibly resilient. They drink saltwater (unmatched by any other mammal), survive on snow for hydration, and endure the Gobi’s extremes: from -40°C in winter to +50°C in summer.

Deinocheirus mirificus

  • Period: Late Cretaceous (~70 million years ago)
  • Location: Omnogovi Province (Gobi Desert)
  • Size: Up to 11 m (36 ft) long, weighing 6.4 metric tons (14,100 lbs).
  • Description: A massive ornithomimosaur with a duckbill-shaped skull, a huge hump-backed sail on its back, and massive arms with 30 cm (12 in) claws.
  • Status: The largest known theropod dinosaur with a "bird-like" body plan, and certainly the largest non-sauropod dinosaur found in Mongolia.

Note: No sauropods (long-necked giants like Argentinosaurus) have been found in Mongolia, making Deinocheirus the record holder. making Deinocheirus the record holder.

🐪 Feature Profile: The Mighty Bactrian Camel

"Талын баялаг, дэлхийн бахархал" (The Wealth of the Steppe, Pride of the World)

While Mongolia is famous for the Gobi Bear (Mazaalai) and the Snow Leopard, the title of the absolute largest animal currently roaming the Mongolian steppes belongs to the Wild Bactrian Camel (Camelus bactrianus).

Here is everything you need to know about this incredible giant.

Why is it the largest?

No other wild Mongolian mammal comes close. The next largest is the Mongolian wild ass (khulan), weighing only 250–300 kg. The Mongolian gray wolf is barely 50 kg. The snow leopard weighs a mere 45–55 kg. In terms of mass, the wild Bactrian camel is an outlier—a true giant.
