His PSP’s memory stick only had 512MB of space. Every other game had been sacrificed—LocoRoco, Daxter, even his savedata for Crisis Core. He was down to the wire.
He clicked download. The file was a single, angry-looking archive: mslug_uc.7z. It downloaded in eleven minutes. Suspiciously fast. The icon was a small, pixelated skull that seemed to be winking.
He extracted it. A single file appeared: EBOOT.PBP. But this was no ordinary EBOOT. The icon on his PC screen shimmered, then resolved into the grimacing face of Marco Rossi. Leo dragged it to his PSP’s GAME folder.
The transfer took two seconds. That was the first red flag.
He unplugged the PSP, thumbed the power switch, and navigated to the Game menu. There it was: METAL SLUG (???). The background was static. The text was corrupted. He pressed X.
The screen went black. Not the normal black of a loading screen—an absolute black, as if the PSP’s backlight had died. Then, a single green line of text appeared, monospaced and ancient:

"Help," Leo whispered.
A text box appeared, rendered in the PSP’s system font: "STAGE 1 – ROUTE: SUBURBIA. OBJECTIVE: SURVIVE."
He ran. He jumped over a pit of spiky logs that looked like corrupted JPEGs. He shot a tank that had his neighbor’s license plate. He rescued a hostage who, instead of giving him a power-up, whispered, "The archive is hungry. Delete me before it learns to read your memory stick."
The hostage then turned into a fried egg and exploded.
By the time Leo reached the boss—a massive helicopter made of recycled PS1 polygons and pure spite—his hands were bleeding from gripping the plastic too hard. The helicopter fired a salvo of missiles. Each missile, upon impact, didn’t explode. It decompressed. They turned into lost forum posts, corrupted save files, and half-finished fan translations. One missile was just a single angry tweet from 2009.
Leo grabbed a rocket launcher from a fallen enemy. He aimed. The PSP’s battery light flashed red.
He fired.
The helicopter split in half, revealing a core of pure, green, highly compressed code. It screamed in 8-bit wail, then collapsed into a .ZIP folder that fell to the ground with a soft plonk.
The world pixelated back into existence. Leo was on his bedroom floor, lying on his back, the PSP on his chest. The screen showed the normal title screen: METAL SLUG ANTHOLOGY. Press Start.
He had 247MB of free space on his memory stick now.
He never downloaded a compressed ISO again. But late at night, when the internet was slow and the seabirds were silent, he would boot up that file. The hostage was still there. The fried egg was still there. And somewhere, deep in the code, a tiny, pixelated hand would wave at him from behind the score counter.
He never waved back.
Metal Slug Anthology includes attract mode cutscenes and endings. These are usually standard MPEG-4 streams. Aggressive compression here reduces resolution (down to 240p) and bitrate, making those victory screens look blocky.
Many UMDs used "dummy files"—empty data padded to move game data to the faster outer edge of the UMD disc for quicker load times. By removing or scrubbing these dummies, you can shave off 200-400MB instantly without touching a single sprite of Marco or Tarma.
