I have curated a list of 15 exceptional titles. This list balances modern hits with timeless classics, divided by genre so you can jump straight to what suits your mood. From Page to Screen: 15 Must-Watch Anime Series
10. Dorohedoro (Manga Complete / Anime Partial)
Why it matters: Punk rock world-building. In a grimy city called "The Hole," a man with a lizard head named Caiman hunts the Sorcerers who cursed him. The manga is a messy, violent, hilarious, and stylish masterpiece. The 3D anime on Netflix captures the chaotic energy perfectly. Read the manga: The black-and-white art is grotesquely
- Read the manga: The black-and-white art is grotesquely beautiful.
9. Monster (Anime & Manga)
Why it matters: A slow-burn masterpiece by Naoki Urasawa. A brilliant Japanese brain surgeon in Germany saves the life of a young boy instead of a famous politician. That boy grows up to become a serial killer named "Johan." The doctor spends the rest of the series hunting the monster he created.
- Read the manga: Urasawa’s realistic art and historical context (post-Berlin Wall) are incredible. No supernatural elements—just pure human evil.
3. Witch Hat Atelier (by Kamome Shirahama)
The pitch: A girl with no magic witnesses a witch perform a spell in secret and discovers that magic is drawn with intricate ink patterns. She becomes an apprentice. Why it’s popular: The art is Disney-level gorgeous (every panel is a painting). The magic system is hard, logical, and beautiful.
For Psychological Thriller Fans: Death Note & Monster
- Death Note (Anime & Manga): The ultimate cat-and-mouse game. A genius high schooler gains the power to kill anyone by writing their name in a notebook. He tries to become "God of the New World," but a genius detective hunts him. Recommendation: Watch the anime first; the second half is rushed in the manga, but both are classics.
- Monster (Manga recommended): A doctor saves a boy's life, only to realize 15 years later he saved a sociopathic monster. This is a slow-burn, realistic thriller set in post-Cold War Germany. Why read the manga? The anime is faithful, but the manga’s pacing and Naoki Urasawa’s realistic art are unmatched.
Part 2: Genre-Defining Gems (Anime & Manga)
Maybe you aren't looking for 100+ episodes of fighting. Perhaps you want romance, horror, or mind games.
16. Solo Leveling (Manhwa/Korean Webtoon)
- Why it’s popular: It has a simple premise (weakest hunter becomes strongest through a video game-like system) but executes it with phenomenal "rule of cool" art. Every chapter ends on a cliffhanger.
- Status: The manhwa is complete. The anime is currently airing but the manhwa’s art is superior.
15. Dandadan (Manga, Anime coming soon)
- Why it’s popular: The most hype manga of the last two years. It is Chainsaw Man meets Scooby-Doo. A occult girl and a alien believer bet on who is real, only to discover both are real. It is chaotic, romantic, and absurdly creative.
- Recommendation: Read it now before the (inevitably huge) anime drops. You want to be the "I read the manga" hipster.
For Romance & Slice of Life: Fruits Basket & Kaguya-sama
- Fruits Basket (2019 Anime & Manga): The gold standard of Shojo (girls' manga). A girl living in a tent ends up living with a mysterious family cursed to turn into zodiac animals. It starts as a quirky comedy but evolves into a deep drama about trauma and generational abuse. Recommendation: The 2019 anime is a perfect, complete adaptation. Read the manga if you prefer original art.
- Kaguya-sama: Love is War (Anime & Manga): Two genius tsunderes are in love, but both refuse to confess, believing the first to confess "loses." The resulting psychological warfare is hilarious. Recommendation: The manga is finished and has a satisfying ending; the anime covers the best arcs.
