The Cast and Tone

The film adopts a pulpy, B-movie tone but with an A-list budget. Samuel L. Jackson is excellent as the antagonist/anti-hero Colonel Packard, whose obsession with defeating Kong mirrors the futility of the Vietnam War. John C. Reilly provides much-needed comic relief as a World War II pilot stranded on the island for decades.

However, the character development is where the film stumbles. While the ensemble cast is talented, many characters feel like generic monster fodder. Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson do their best, but their characters lack the emotional weight of the main stars (Kong and the creatures).
