Icom Ui7 Am Fm Unit Install [exclusive] 【2024-2026】
The UI-7 is a plug-in internal module that adds wide-band AM and FM broadcast reception (typically 0.5–1.7 MHz AM and 76–108 MHz FM) to amateur HF/50 MHz transceivers such as the IC-7300, IC-9700, IC-7610, IC-705, and some older models like the IC-9100.
Base Station Installation
If installing at home, place the radio on a desk or shelf. While the heatsink handles passive cooling well, avoid enclosing the radio in a tight cabinet. icom ui7 am fm unit install
Testing the Tuner
- FM Mode: Tune to a strong local station (e.g., 101.1 MHz). You should hear clear audio through your amplifier/speakers.
- AM Mode: Tune to 540–1700 kHz. Note that AM is more susceptible to electrical noise from your engine alternator. If you hear a whine that changes pitch with RPM, revisit your ground wire location.
- Weather Band: Press the WX button (if supported) to scan NOAA channels.
Step 4: Audio Output Wiring
The UI7 has two output options:
- RCA jacks (Left/Right): Use these if connecting to an external marine amplifier (e.g., Fusion or JL Audio).
- Bare wires (Speaker L/R +/-): These are line level, not amplified. Connecting them directly to 4-ohm speakers will produce very low volume. You need an amplifier.
Typical Setup: UI7 RCA out → Marine amplifier speaker level in → Amplifier → Marine speakers. The UI-7 is a plug-in internal module that
Crucial note: Do not connect the UI7 audio outputs to the “AUX IN” of a car stereo head unit that shares a ground with the VHF radio. This can create a ground loop (alternator whine). Use a ground loop isolator if necessary. Base Station Installation If installing at home, place
Phase 2: Mounting the Main Unit
Step 6: Replace the Cover
- Ensure no tools, screws, or debris remain inside.
- Replace the bottom cover and screws (cross-tighten gradually).
- Reconnect power and antennas.
📦 What’s Included
- UI-7 module (small PCB with a metal shield)
- Installation screws (usually 2x small Phillips)
- Foam spacer (for some models)
- Instruction sheet (often minimal)
Troubleshooting Common Issues
- No Audio: Check volume knob and squelch settings. Ensure the speaker is not muted.
- Alternator Whine: This is a grounding issue. Re-route power cables away from engine ignition wires or improve the ground connection from the radio chassis to the vehicle body.
- "HI" Temp Warning: If the radio displays a temperature warning, lower the transmit power (Low or Medium setting) or improve airflow around the heatsink.
Part 4: Post-Install – Configuration and Testing
With all wires connected, restore power and turn on your Icom VHF radio.
