Fortigate Vm License Trial ((install))

Post: FortiGate VM — Trial License

Need a FortiGate VM trial license? Fortinet offers short-term evaluation licenses for virtual FortiGate instances so you can test features like NGFW, IPS, and SSL inspection in your environment. To get started:

  • Visit Fortinet’s Support & Downloads portal and sign in (or create an account).
  • Go to “Evaluation” or search “FortiGate VM” and request a trial license for your hypervisor (VMware, KVM, Hyper-V, Azure, AWS).
  • Download the appropriate FortiGate VM image and apply the trial license via the GUI (System → License) or CLI (execute request license fetch) per Fortinet’s instructions.
  • Trial licenses are time-limited and may include feature limits; contact Fortinet sales or your reseller to extend or purchase a full license.

Notes:

  • Use the VM image matching your platform and FortiOS version.
  • Keep your account credentials and device serial number handy when requesting the license.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid During the Trial

Your trial experience can be ruined by simple mistakes. Avoid these: fortigate vm license trial

Step 3: Select Your Platform

You will be prompted to choose your hypervisor or cloud provider: Post: FortiGate VM — Trial License Need a

  • On-prem: VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, KVM, or Xen.
  • Cloud: AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud (Note: Cloud marketplaces offer “Hourly” billing, but first-time users often get credits).

7) Quick validation tests (get instant feedback)

  1. Connectivity
    • From the FortiGate CLI: execute ping to a public IP (e.g., 8.8.8.8).
  2. Web UI features
    • Check System → Status for license info, FortiGuard services, and UTM features.
  3. Policy test
    • Create a simple policy: internal → wan, allow HTTP/HTTPS, NAT enabled.
    • From a client behind the internal interface, try browsing to a website.
  4. UTM features (if trial includes them)
    • Enable Antivirus, Web Filtering or IPS on a test policy and verify logs show detection/activity.
  5. Logging
    • Check logs: Log & Report → Forward traffic to local disk or FortiAnalyzer if you have one.

4. Key Limitations of the Trial License

| Aspect | Trial Limit | |--------|--------------| | Duration | 15 days (non-renewable with same email) | | Throughput | Up to 1-3 Gbps (depends on VM size) | | Concurrent sessions | ~200,000-500,000 | | Technical support | Community/Forums only (no TAC) | | Firmware upgrades | Allowed, but license remains trial | | Production use | Not permitted (only evaluation/lab) | Visit Fortinet’s Support & Downloads portal and sign

Option B: Through Cloud Marketplaces

  • AWS Marketplace – Search “FortiGate Next-Generation Firewall (BYOL Trial)” – choose “Bring Your Own License” and select trial option.
  • Azure Marketplace – Look for “FortiGate VM” – some offers include a free trial period (usually 15 days) without upfront payment.

Step 5: Receive the License File (.lic)

Fortinet will email you a small text file (the license). This file is bound to the Serial Number of your VM instance. You have exactly the number of days specified to activate it.

Option A: Re-image (The Lab Method)

For lab learning, you can simply delete the VM, deploy a fresh OVF, and request a new trial license using a different email address. This is acceptable for learning, not for enterprise POCs.

Hyper-V (VHD)

  1. Create a new VM, attach the VHD, configure memory/CPU and virtual NICs.
  2. Boot and access console for initial configuration.
