Upgrade Recommendation
| From Version | Recommendation | |--------------|----------------| | < 1.1.40 | Recommended – fixes stability and IPv6 issues. | | 1.1.45–1.1.48 | Optional – upgrade only if experiencing UI sluggishness or LTE reconnection delays. | | 1.1.49 | No need to change. |
What About Newer Firmware (v1.2.x)?
D-Link later released v1.2.0 and v1.2.2 for newer hardware revisions (DWR-M960 rev B). However, not all rev A devices support v1.2.x due to a different NAND flash layout. If your device is a rev A (check the sticker on the bottom), v1.1.49 is the final stable and safe upgrade path.
Attempting to force-flash v1.2.x onto a rev A device will result in a brick. Stick with v1.1.49. Firmware Version: DWR-M960-V1
3.1. Operating System
- Kernel: Linux Kernel (likely version 3.18.x to 4.14.x, depending on the chipset age).
- Root Filesystem: SquashFS (compressed, read-only) with a JFFS2/UBIFS overlay for runtime configuration storage.
Prerequisites
- A computer with an Ethernet cable (do not do this over Wi-Fi).
- The firmware file:
DWR-M960_FW_v1.1.49.bin( download only from D-Link’s official support site). - A stable power supply for the router (no power outages).
- A backup of your current configuration (optional but smart).
What is the DWR-M960?
The DWR-M960 is a 4G LTE router by D-Link, designed to provide internet connectivity via a SIM card (cellular network) as well as standard Ethernet and Wi-Fi. It’s commonly used in:
- Rural or remote areas without fixed-line broadband
- Mobile or temporary setups (e.g., caravans, RVs, events)
- Failover internet connections for small businesses
Firmware is the built-in software that controls the router’s functions—like Wi-Fi, cellular signal handling, security, and web interface.
