How to Avoid Malware When Downloading Any File

Follow these rules before downloading anything from any site:

  1. Check the URL – Avoid 2shared, 4shared, MediaFire, Uploaded, Rapidgator for executables/DLLs unless you’re 100% certain of the source.
  2. Use VirusTotal – Upload any suspicious DLL or EXE to VirusTotal.com before opening.
  3. Never run DLLs manually – DLLs are meant to be used by programs, not executed directly. If a site tells you to download a DLL and place it in System32, it’s almost certainly malware.
  4. Stick to official sites – For Buddhist content, no legitimate teacher or organization will ask you to download a DLL.

2. Untrusted Source (2shared.com)

  • Reputation: 2shared.com is a generic file-hosting service (cyberlocker). Unlike official developer websites or trusted repositories (like GitHub, SourceForge, or the Microsoft Store), anyone can upload anything to 2shared without vetting or scanning.
  • Lack of Accountability: If the file is a virus, there is no official developer to contact or hold accountable. The uploader is anonymous.
  • Deceptive Ads: Sites like 2shared are notorious for confusing "Download" buttons that actually lead to malware or adware. It is very easy to click the wrong button and infect your computer.
