Elias pulled his hand back from the mouse as if burned. He scrambled for the power button, but his hand froze. The man on the screen held up a hand, as if signaling him to wait. Then, the man pointed to the far wall of the atrium.
A red warning box popped up in Elias’s interface, but it wasn't a standard error message.
STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY WARNING: ANOMALY DETECTED.
The man in the grey suit tapped his tablet, and a section of the virtual wall turned translucent, revealing the rebar within. It was corroded, snapped in places Elias hadn't even inspected yet.
Elias stared. The software wasn't just rendering the building; it was simulating its reality. It was showing him a flaw that existed in the real world, a flaw he hadn't known about.
"Who are you?" Elias typed into the command bar, feeling foolish.
The screen flickered. The text appeared in the dialogue box: I am the Architect.
Elias’s heart hammered against his ribs. He looked at the filename at the top of the window: Chief_Architect_Premier_X16_v26.3.0.10_x64_Free.exe.
"Free," he muttered. "Nothing is free."
He looked back at the screen. The figure had vanished. In its place, a new set of blueprints had materialized on the virtual floor of the atrium. They were plans for a reinforcement strategy that would save the wall—a strategy so elegant and brilliant that it made Elias’s previous work look like a child’s doodles.
He spent the rest of the night implementing the changes. The software worked with him, a silent partner anticipating every need. By dawn, the project was finished. It was a masterpiece.
Elias hit Save.
A prompt appeared.
PROJECT SAVED. PAYMENT DUE.
Elias stared. A cursor blinked in the input field below. There was no dollar sign. No bitcoin address.
PAYMENT: YOUR NEXT DESIGN.
Elias blinked, reading the words again. The text dissolved.
A new email pinged in his inbox. It was from the City Council. “Mr. Vance, we received the preliminary files you uploaded automatically. We are... astounded. This is visionary work. We have a new project for you—the City Library. Will you take the contract?”
Elias looked at the screen. The Chief Architect interface was still open, the black compass logo spinning slowly in the corner. He thought about the man in the grey suit. He thought about the impossible render, the saved wall, the saved career.
He thought about the phrase: Your next design.
If he used the software for the library, he would owe the program something else. Perhaps the design after that. And the one after that. It was a ladder he could climb forever, but he would never be allowed to step off.
He hovered his finger over the power button.
He could shut it down. Go back to the crashing software and the sleepless nights. Be a mediocre architect with a clear conscience. Or he could keep the window open and become a legend, building cities he no longer truly owned.
The rain stopped outside. Sunlight broke through the clouds, illuminating the dust on his desk.
Elias moved the mouse. He didn't close the program. He clicked File > New Project.
The screen went black for a split second, welcoming him back.
