Some hackers take an obscure PS2 game running via a PS2 Classics PKG wrapper (like Hard Truck: 18 Wheels of Steel) and rename the startup icon to "American Truck Simulator." You download a 2GB file, install it, and find yourself playing a pixelated trucking game from 2003. It is not ATS.

Patching a PS3 game requires expensive certification through Sony. It was not financially viable.
Not a trucking sim, but it features massive Big Rig vehicles. You can drive monster trucks and hauling rigs through mud. It scratches the "big vehicle" itch.
