- Use a plugin manager or community plugins repository for ACDSee (if available) to find a WebP plugin compatible with your exact ACDSee build.
Part 2: The ACDSee WebP Plugin – Features and Capabilities
Not all plugins are created equal. The official ACDSee WebP plugin (as well as some third-party alternatives) offers a specific set of features that integrate directly into the ACDSee environment.
Method 2: Windows System Codec (For older ACDSee versions)
If you are using ACDSee 2020 or older, or if the official update fails:
- Download the WebP Codec for Windows from the official libwebp project or a trusted repository like Microsoft’s WebP Image Extensions (available on the Microsoft Store).
- Run the installer. This registers WebP with the Windows Imaging Component (WIC).
- Restart your PC (critical step).
- Open ACDSee. Even without a dedicated ACDSee plugin, the software may now read WebP via the Windows system codec.
Method B: The "Total Commander" Style Plugins (The Hack)
Because ACDSee was slow to adopt native support, the community turned to third-party plugins originally designed for file managers like Total Commander or XnView.
- The Plugin: Often a DLL file (e.g.,
wlx_webp.dllor similar wrapper). - The Installation: Users had to place the DLL into the ACDSee
PlugInsfolder and manually register the extension in the ACDSee options menu. - The Instability: These plugins were often 32-bit only. When ACDSee transitioned fully to 64-bit architecture (ACDSee Pro/Ultimate 2018+), these 32-bit plugins failed to load, causing a wave of confusion among users migrating their setups.
