Before making any system changes, "download" a copy of your current NAND to your SD card for safety. Launch GM9 : Power off the 3DS, then hold while powering it back on. Run Script Hardware Requirements:

Hardware Requirements:

  • A Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New 3DS, or New 3DS XL.
  • An SD card (minimum 2GB, but 32GB recommended). A 3DS NAND dump is ~1GB to ~1.8GB depending on your model.
  • An SD card reader for your computer.
  • A way to run homebrew (requires custom firmware – Luma3DS/boot9strap). You cannot backup NAND without custom firmware.

Part 2: What You Need Before You Start

1. Prerequisites

  • A working 3DS (or a hard-bricked unit with a hardmod).
  • GodMode9 (latest version) – the only safe tool for NAND writing from SD.
  • A verified NAND image (nand.bin, nandfat16.bin, or essential.exefs).
  • SD card formatted to FAT32 (32kB cluster size) with enough free space (≥ 2GB for NAND, plus the image).
  • Optional for hardmod: Soldering iron, USB reader, and a PC with Win32DiskImager or dd.

Key Terms:

  • NAND Backup (.bin): A raw dump of your system memory.
  • NAND Minimun – A smaller backup excluding user data.
  • CTRTransfer Image: A clean, model-specific firmware image (e.g., 2.1.0-4U_ctrtransfer.o3ds).
  • Essential Files Backup: A tiny backup of your console’s unique encryption seeds (essential.exefs).

3. Method A: Install via GodMode9 (Softmod / Booting system)

Use this if your 3DS can still boot into GodMode9.

  1. Copy the NAND image (nand.bin) to the root of your SD card.
  2. Insert SD card into 3DS.
  3. Boot into GodMode9 (hold START+SELECT+X on power).
  4. Navigate:
    • Go to [0:] SDCARD → select your nand.bin.
    • Choose "NAND image file options...".
    • Select "Restore NAND (keep LFCS)" (keeps console-unique encryption keys).
    • Confirm by pressing the combo: A + → (right D-pad).
  5. Wait for verification and write (≈15–20 minutes).
  6. After success, press START to reboot.

Result: Your 3DS NAND is now restored to the state of the image.

Part 2: Why Would You Need a NAND Download or Install?

Understanding the why helps you locate the right tools and process. Common scenarios include:

  1. System Brick Recovery: You installed a bad custom theme, modified system titles, or had a power outage during an update. You need to restore a previously backed-up NAND or perform a CTRTransfer.
  2. Region Changing: You want to convert a Japanese 3DS to US/EU firmware. This requires installing a region-specific NAND image.
  3. Downgrading: You need to revert to an older firmware version for exploit compatibility.
  4. Hardmod Repair: For consoles with physical NAND corruption, advanced users use a soldered NAND reader to flash a new image.
